“Rivals,” Hulu and Disney+’s acclaimed drama about the ruthless British independent television industry of the 1980s, will return for Season 2, Hulu announced Wednesday.

The series is based on a 1988 novel by Dame Jilly Cooper, and tells the story of wealthy and ambitious entrepreneurs Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and Tony, Lord Baddingham (David Tennant) as they build a network to compete with the BBC during the era of deregulation. Hulu announced today that the drama Rivals, based on the novel by Dame Jilly Cooper, will return for a second season. Following a dramatic, cliff-hanger ending, Emea Disney+ with Happy Prince (part of ITV Studios) has officially renewed the hit UK Original series for a second run.

Rivals Season 2 will debut on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ in the UK and internationally.

Rivals is part of Cooper’s bestselling “Rutshire Chronicles,” and is packed full of wit, romantic entanglements, sex and unforgettable characters. In the meantime, Nickell’s partner André Hanscombe was left to navigate life alone with the couple’s infant son.

British author Jilly Cooper is synonymous with sex. In the U.K., the 87-year-old has long reigned as the queen of “bonkbusters” (aka romance novels), with titles like “Riders” and “Tackle” usually accompanied by saucy jacket covers (one edition of “Riders” features a woman in tight-fitting horse-riding pants with a man’s hand placed provocatively on her posterior.)

“She’s a writer with a reputation within the United Kingdom,” says Felicity Blunt, Cooper’s longtime literary agent at Curtis Brown (part of UTA). “But I would say you should never judge a book by a cover.”

That much is evident in an expensive and expansive new TV adaptation of one of her most famous books, “Rivals,” which took the U.K. by storm when it was released on Disney+ last month and is now catching on in the U.

A new drama led by David Tennant has a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and it looks to be a streaming success. Tennant will forever be known for his role as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who, a portrayal that has made the actor an absolute favorite among fans of the seminal sci-fi series. But in recent years, the veteran performer has added several other popular credits to his filmography.

He showed a more villainous side as Kilgrave in the Marvel show Jessica Jones, toggling the line between loathsome and compelling, while starring opposite Krysten Ritter. He's also a co-lead on Good Omens, which will wrap up with a 90-minute farewell, ending his run on Prime Video's popular supernatural series alongside Michael Sheen. But the BAFTA-nominated actor recently debuted a new starring role.

Exclusive: Disney+’s Rivals may launch tomorrow but the Jilly Cooper adaptation has been living inside producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins’ head since he entered the TV industry 25 years ago.

Treadwell-Collins has had a stellar career including a lengthy stint running BBC soap EastEnders and the idea to adapt Cooper’s novels has always remained front and center of his mind. But until Disney gave him the greenlight in 2022, he told Deadline he felt he was consistently coming up against the same enemy – the innate “snobbery” of British TV.

“I had meetings with the BBC and ITV years ago when I didn’t have the rights and when I said, ‘Would you go for something like Jilly Cooper?’ they would look at me like I’d farted,” he said. “There’s a snobbery about her. Throughout my career I had kept mentioning Jilly and everyone sort of laughed at and ridiculed me.

“You will find you bounce from emotion to emotion to emotion to emotion,” Victoria Smurfit promises of Rivals. The series, based on Dame Jilly Cooper’s novel, is full of romantic entanglements, dastardly deals, sex, and wit, set in 1980s England and against the backdrop of the ruthless world of independent television. The BBC has commissioned a third series of James Graham’s award winning drama Sherwood, and here are the details.

Aside perhaps from Jack Thorne, James Graham may well be the most prolific screen/playwright working today. By far his biggest runaway success is dark drama Sherwood, which recently concluded its second series on the BBC.

A Very Royal Scandal, which launches in a fortnight, stars Michael Sheen as the disgraced Prince with Ruth Wilson playing the role of his interviewer Emily Maitlis.

A Very Royal Scandal is a three-part TV series as opposed to Scoop, the Netflix feature that starred Rufus Sewell and Gillian Anderson in the lead roles. It is the third in the A Very… series that Amazon has previously co-produced with the BBC, although this one will only air on Prime Video. Unlike Scoop, Maitlis is involved with this one as an EP.

In the trailer, Wilson’s Maitlis can be seen pursuing the story that would make her a global household name and destroy the Prince’s reputation in a pivotal moment in British history, which saw him buckle under questions around his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and make a sea of humiliating utterances.

Disney+ has set a premiere date for Rivals, the Jilly Cooper adaptation starring David Tennant, Aidan Turner, Katherine Parkinson, and Danny Dyer.

Lee Mason, Disney’s director of scripted content in Europe, announced at the Edinburgh TV Festival that the eight-part series will drop on October 18 in the UK. Rivals will stream on Hulu in the U.S.

It is part of Cooper’s bestselling Rutshire Chronicles and is set against the backdrop of the excess and antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England.

It’s an episode Prince Andrew would no doubt wish to be forgotten, but his car-crash “Newsnight” interview is set to enthral viewers yet again in Prime Video’s upcoming dramatization.

“A Very Royal Scandal,” which stars Michael Sheen as the disgraced prince and Ruth Wilson as arch interviewer Emily Maitlis, has been set for release on the streaming platform on Sept. 19, Variety can confirm.

BFI Distribution has acquired UK-Ireland distribution rights to Moin Hussain’s feature debut Sky Peals.

BFI Distribution acquired the film from Bankside Films, and will release it theatrically in the UK and Ireland on August 9.

The film follows a man working nightshifts at a motorway service station, who tries to piece together a picture of his recently deceased father, from whom he had been estranged.

Jones it stars two brilliant actors Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen in the lead roles of Liv and Will and it follows the story of Liv as she finds out that her perfect marriage was not as perfect as she thought because her husband was cheating on her.
