Shin'ya Tsukamoto was born on 1 January 1960 in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. He is an actor and director, known for Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989), A Snake of June (2002) and Tokyo Fist (1995).

Togo Igawa is an actor/director living in England. In 1968 he joined the Theatre Centre 68 (precursor of the Black Tent Theatre), and went on to tour throughout Japan, performing in more than 120 cities. In 1983 he moved to England. In 1986, the opening season for the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon Avon, he became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company as its first Japanese actor. In the process Yoshinaga has won many awards including Japan Academy Prizes and starred in films that have won international accolade including Special Grand Prix at the Montreal World Film Festival for Cape Nostalgia ('Fushigi Na Misaki No Monogatari') and Cannes Film Festival's Blue Ribbon Awards for the aforementioned Foundry Town. Among her other valuable contributions Yoshinaga has been a supporter of the anti-nuclear movement and has played a hibakusha ('atomic bomb survivor') on TV and has contributed to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Her pacifism has lead her to numerous appearances and public interactions in her fight against war and militarism. She has been reciting poetry by residents and survivor from Nagasaki and Hiroshima and lent her support to the people of Okinawa who fight and oppose the Tokyo Central government and the US military station and expansion in Okinawa. Yoshinaga Sayuri is often considered the most notable Japanese actress.

As the first female Japanese film star, Kurishima's pioneering contributions to Japanese film cannot be overlooked. In 1921, she joined Shochiku Kamata Studios and made her debut in Henry Kotani's Bijinso. Her 1923 Sendo Kouta became a big hit and she was dubbed the "Queen of Kamata." She eventually married longtime leading man Yoshinobu Ikeda. In 1935, she starred in Eien no Ai, a film released in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the founding of Kamata Studios, and retired shortly after, leaving the film world while still a superstar. Later, apart from being called out of retirement a few times for special film appearances, she devoted herself to dancing and became active as head of the Mizuki school of dance, which has tens of thousands of disciples across Japan. Two extant, though incomplete, versions of her films are Fujoki (1922) and Hatachi no Koro (1924).

Dead at the age of twenty six does not allow for much of a career or legacy, but that was the promise of Michiko Oikawa who so early in life had already begun to impress and earn the title of 'the eternal virgin,' a description which years later would also be assigned to Setsuko Hara. Born in Tokyo, Japan to Christian parents she would go on to profess the same faith as she began acting in theatre and graduating from the Tokyo Music School. She would commence work under contract at Shochiku Studio in 1929, but as early as 1930 would have to take a break of one year due to a worsening heart problem. Similarly, she would have to take time off in 1934 only to return in 1935. Following her return she did appear in new films, but was soon ill again culminating in her death due to tuberculosis in 1938. Her earlier boyfriend, the novelist On Watanabe, had also died following an accident at age thirty in 1930.
