Courtney A. Kemp has nabbed her first series greenlight under her overall deal with Netflix.
Variety has learned that Netflix has ordered the drama series “Nemesis,” which is co-created by Kemp and Tani Marole in his series writing debut. The official logline for the series states:
“‘Nemesis’ is the story of two men on either side of the law, the tale of what happens when an unstoppable force (an expert criminal) meets an immovable object (a brilliant police detective). What starts as a series that aims to subvert the heist genre at every turn, amped with thrilling life-or-death stakes, family dynamics and explosive action, actually gives birth to an exploration of what drives us, sustains us, and ultimately destroys us.”
“Tani and I are excited to bring a hard-hitting psychological crime drama to Netflix, specific in location, but broad in universal themes of right and wrong, love and loss, and loyalty vs self-preservation,...

This article is presented in partnership with Rabbit Hole.
Jay Ellis is a busy man. The “Insecure” and “Top Gun: Maverick” star is a regular at the Sundance Film Festival, but this year he only had time to pop in for a whirlwind 48 hours thanks to a schedule that includes two new shows coming out this year (Netflix’s “Running Point” and Peacock’s “All Her Fault”) and a theater gig in New York this summer. But Ellis still finds time within that packed slate to mentor the next generation of filmmakers.
Without a film playing at the festival, he was on hand to attend the IndieWire Chili Party and talk about his involvement in Rabbit Hole’s Creative Spirit Challenge. The premium spirits brand, which has long been a supporter of independent film, has launched a pitch contest in which first-time filmmakers can win the camera equipment needed to make their first short film.

There have been many TV shows focused on female friendships over the years. For this Galentines Day, you need to watch these excellent shows.
Galentines Day was coined thanks to Parks and Recreation. It’s celebrated the day before Valentine’s Day, and is a chance to celebrate the female friends in our lives. There is nothing better than a strong female friendship and being surrounded by women holding us up.
Too many shows have pitted women against women. It was the way of the world in the past, right? Well, now it’s time to see women supporting women, and you need these five shows to do that. Let me say that there are way more than five, though!
Derry Girls
Set during the 1990s, Derry Girls brings us a story of a group of Catholic teenage girls (and a boy) navigating the world of growing up in the midst of The Troubles.

Another one bites the dust, and this one is a very unfortunate misfire of a cancellation. Earlier this week, Hulu announced the cancellation of the On Collection comedy series How to Die Alone, which was created by and stars Insecure and The White Lotus star Natasha Rothwell. The series released eight episodes across three weeks in September 2024 and holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In the wake of the cancellation, Rothwell released a statement to the press, and she didn't shy away from the vulnerability and disappointment she feels because of this decision. Rothwell implored the importance of television reflecting the "diversity of the world" and underscores that representation doesn't begin and end with visibility: "It’s about ensuring that our stories, our existence and our cultural contributions are not erased."
Read more of Rothwell's statement via Variety below:

Even though Younger was a fan-favorite hit during its inital seven-season run, the series has kicked off 2025 by having a major resurgence. On Jan. 7, the TV Land original romantic comedy series from creator Darren Star was added to Netflix and popped. As of Feb. 6, the show remains in the top 10 alongside recent new seasons of hit Netflix originals The Night Agent and The Recruit.
It's the most recent library series to come to Netflix and experience the "Netflix effect," which simply means that new viewers are discovering the series and old viewers are rediscovering the series. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in March 2025, Younger originally aired between 2015 and 2021 and effectively filled a gap for actually good guilty pleasure programming we'd been missing.
While your Netflix (re)binge-watch of Younger might be nearing its end, you're likely wondering what show to add to your watch list to keep the good times rolling.

The writers of the HBO comedy Insecure, Issa Rae and Syreeta Singleton, have announced that they’ve been developing a remake of F. Gary Gray’s heist film Set It Off back in 2019. Little news has been revealed since then and both have gone on to other projects. Notably, Singleton is recently coming off of the comedy, One of Them Days, which our own Tyler Nichol enjoyed as he said in his review, “I tend to be a tough sell when it comes to comedy and One of Them Days managed to really tickle my funny bone. The laughs per minute were high, with several subtle jokes that are easy to miss. It does what any great comedy does: blend comedy with emotional stakes for a fun time.”
Singleton is now giving an update on the state of the Set It Off remake. According to The Wrap, the writer expounded,...

“How to Die Alone,” the comedy series created by and starring Natasha Rothwell, has been canceled after one season on Hulu.
The series hailed from On Collective, a Disney content brand that produces projects created by people of color and from underrepresented communities. On gave “How to Die Alone” a series order in November of 2022 before releasing it in September 2024.
In a statement to Variety, Rothwell wrote that she is “shocked, heartbroken and frankly, baffled” at On’s decision. Though a source close to the studio indicates that viewership wasn’t strong enough to renew “How to Die Alone,” Rothwell argues that it was “an undeniable critical, creative and award-winning success.” Indeed, the series achieved a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety‘s review calling it “skillfully crafted” and Rothwell’s performance “flawless.” It also won the Independent Spirit Award for ensemble cast in a new scripted series and has three...

[The story contains spoilers for the fifth and final season of Insecure.]
Issa Rae says some Insecure fans are still unhappy with how the show ended, even years later.
The Emmy-winning series, which ended in December 2021 following a five-season fun, followed the everyday and sometimes awkward experiences of modern-day Black women. Rae not only co-created Insecure but she also starred in it.
The show concluded with Rae’s character Issa Dee rekindling her romantic relationship with Lawrence Walker (Jay Ellis). However, some fans weren’t too happy with this renewed romance as the pair had an on-again, off-again relationship throughout the series. Lawrence had also fathered a child with another woman, Condola Hayes (Christina Elmore), around the same time that he and Issa were discussing a future together.
Rae recently told People magazine that even four years later, “people are really mad about” how the hit show ended.
“People have told me to reshoot, which is crazy because they didn’t...

Though Issa Rae’s seminal HBO dramedy Insecure has long since wrapped, with a final episode airing in late 2021, the multi-hyphenate is very aware that some fans are displeased with the ending — even to the point of asking for reshoots.
In a new interview with People, the Barbie star admitted she knows that “people are really mad about” how the show concluded. After five seasons spanning 2016 through 2021, the perennially awkward and self-titled Issa Dee opts to rekindle her romance with on-again, off-again beau Lawrence (Jay Ellis) to the chagrin of many devoted viewers, who had long since dismissed the ex as no good, especially after he fathered a child with another woman, Condola (Christina Elmore). Ellis’ character is so polarizing that the actor revealed in 2020 that he has been “punched,” “slapped” and “cussed out” due to his portrayal.

The stars shine in bright and boisterous new buddy comedy, executive produced by Issa Rae, that only stumbles when it leans into cartoon
I will be the first to say: I miss Insecure, which left a dynamic duo-sized hole in the TV landscape since it concluded in December 2021. Issa Rae’s era-shaping series was about many things – the Black community in south Los Angeles, the diversity pablums of the 2010s, millennial dating, for starters – but at its core, it was a seminal portrait of longstanding, complex female friendship in one’s late 20s, the kind forged by time, ridiculous escapades and plenty of meaty conflict for viewers to hash out at the proverbial water cooler.
The shadow of the erstwhile HBO series looms large over One of Them Days, a boisterous new buddy comedy executive produced by Rae and penned by the former show writer Syreeta Singleton. Also set in...

Few moments provoke more anxious dread for residents of The Jungles, the vibrant Los Angeles locale in which the hilarious new film One of Them Days is set, than the first of the month. Their surly landlord lurks around the apartment complex collecting rent on units in need of desperate repair. Looking for any reason to evict his long-time, mostly working-class, tenants, Uche (Rizi Timane) enforces a strict policy: If you don’t pay, you can’t stay.
So it’s a real problem when Uche tells Dreux (Keke Palmer) that he hasn’t received her rent. The fatigued waitress answers her landlord’s harsh knocks in a state of half-sleep. Uche must be mistaken, she insists, because her best friend and roommate Alyssa (Sza) paid him. It turns out that Alyssa tasked her unreliable boyfriend Keshawn (Joshua David Neal) with delivering the payment. And he, a failing serial entrepreneur,...

Universal and Blumhouse’s “Wolf Man” reboot and the Keke Palmer-led comedy “One of Them Days” will contend for the top slot on box office charts over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
Regardless of which lands in first, neither are expected to break out in what’s shaping up to be another quiet weekend for North American cinemas. “Wolf Man” is poised to open to $17 million to $21 million from 3,300 venues over the four-day frame, while “One of Them Days” looks to collect $8 million to $13 million from 2,650 theaters between Friday and Monday.
Universal and Sony each canceled the premieres of “Wolf Man” and “One of Them Days” due to the fires and extreme winds in Los Angeles. In terms of moviegoing, though, attendance doesn’t appear to be affected by the devastating wildfires that continued to ravage though parts of Los Angeles, one of the biggest theatrical markets in the country.

NBC is diving into the murderous world of a suburban garden club with Grosse Pointe Garden Society.
Based on the trailer alone, we’re already invested.
It’s hard to get a read on a show from a 60-second trailer, but the hook is compelling, and the cast is an embarrassment of riches, meaning we should be in for one of the more buzzy shows of the 2024-25 TV season.
(NBC/Screenshot)
According to NBC, the new one-hour drama “follows four members of a suburban garden club who find their lives intertwined by scandal, mischief, and a shared secret — a murder no one wants to talk about.”
Oh my!
“As dark truths begin to rot their lives under the surface, they try to struggle to remain as perfect as the flowers blooming in the garden above.”

The Dick Wolf television universe is filled with familiar faces. You may not know the name of every actor who appears on an FBI show, but chances are you've seen them pop up for a supporting or perhaps even a leading role in a One Chicago or Law & Order show.

NBC has announced when the new drama Grosse Pointe Garden Society will premiere, but does it have the right time slot?
NBC is wrapping up its 2024 slate by announcing when shows will be returning in winter 2025. That includes the new drama Grosse Pointe Garden Society. Why Grosse Pointe Garden Society may have a bad time slot
On the surface, the series has a lot to offer for fans of shows like Desperate Housewives. It integrates various characters and boasts a...
