Michelle Obama will co-host the video podcast Imo, with her brother and basketball executive Craig Robinson. Higher Ground, a production company founded by the Obamas, announced the podcast Monday. Imo, which stands for “in my opinion,” will feature special guests including Issa Rae, Keke Palmer, Seth Rogen, and Tracee Ellis Ross, inviting them to tackle audience questions and hold candid conversations around relationships, religion, parenting, family, and everyday life.

“With everything going on in the world, we’re all looking for answers and people to turn to,” Obama said in a statement.

Entertainment tech company Gathr has announced a full Api (Application Performance Interface) integration with Artinii.Pro, a software service aimed at secure delivery and exhibition of films worldwide. Gathr and Artinii.Pro’s new collaboration combines film booking, event management, ticketing, and exhibition into a “fully automated system for non-theatrical screenings.”

Courtney A. Kemp has nabbed her first series greenlight under her overall deal with Netflix.

Variety has learned that Netflix has ordered the drama series “Nemesis,” which is co-created by Kemp and Tani Marole in his series writing debut. The official logline for the series states:

“‘Nemesis’ is the story of two men on either side of the law, the tale of what happens when an unstoppable force (an expert criminal) meets an immovable object (a brilliant police detective). What starts as a series that aims to subvert the heist genre at every turn, amped with thrilling life-or-death stakes, family dynamics and explosive action, actually gives birth to an exploration of what drives us, sustains us, and ultimately destroys us.”

Netflix has officially greenlighted Nemesis, the first series under Power universe creator Courtney A. Kemp’s overall deal with the streamer. Created by Kemp and Tani Marole, the project had already been casting for a couple of months.

Matthew Law and Y’Ian Noel have been tapped for the titular leads. Also cast as series regulars are two Power alums, Domenick Lombardozzi and Jonnie Park, as well as Cleopatra Coleman, Tre Hale and Ariana Guerra.

Amazon’s Prime VIdeo has landed exclusive U.S. streaming rights to Bible epic “The Chosen,” as well as previously announced unscripted spinoff “The Chosen In The Wild with Bear Grylls.” It’s part of a new wide-ranging deal between series producer 5&2 Studios and Amazon MGM Studios, which also includes a theatrical release component for the next two installments of the hit series about the life of Jesus Christ, played by Jonathan Roumie.

The deal was announced Sunday during a livestream on 5&2 Studios’ YouTube page, and comes as 5&2 Studios prepares to release Season 5 of “The Chosen” next month in theaters. After that, “The Chosen” Season 5 will now exclusively premiere on Amazon’s Prime Video in the U.S. this June.

Under the deal, Prime Video will also take over exclusive U.S. streaming rights to the first five seasons of “The Chosen,” as well as future seasons of “The Chosen.

“One of Them Days” (2025) is a buddy comedy-drama that follows two women on the brink of eviction from their apartment. It arrived online shortly after Sza’s performance at the Super Bowl Lix. She makes her feature film debut with this project and stars alongside Keke Palmer. They play two best friends who must find their rent money in a couple of hours or they will be thrown out of their apartment. Issa Rae serves as one of the producers in this film, which is written by Syreeta Singleton, who has previously worked on shows like “Insecure” and “Central Park.” Lawrence Lamont, who directed this film, has previously collaborated with Singleton on Rap Sh!t.

Issa Rae, Conan O’Brien and the cast of the HBO series The Last of Us have been added to the speaker line-up at the 2025 SXSW conference.

Also set for panels, keynotes and conversations are After Midnight host Taylor Tomlinson, Kevin Bacon and Joe Manganiello, along with showrunners Eric Ledgin (St. Denis Medical) and Nahnatchka Khan (Laid).

Another one bites the dust, and this one is a very unfortunate misfire of a cancellation. Earlier this week, Hulu announced the cancellation of the On Collection comedy series How to Die Alone, which was created by and stars Insecure and The White Lotus star Natasha Rothwell. The series released eight episodes across three weeks in September 2024 and holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In the wake of the cancellation, Rothwell released a statement to the press, and she didn't shy away from the vulnerability and disappointment she feels because of this decision. Rothwell implored the importance of television reflecting the "diversity of the world" and underscores that representation doesn't begin and end with visibility: "It’s about ensuring that our stories, our existence and our cultural contributions are not erased."

Disney Entertainment Television (Det) announced on Thursday participants for its 2024-2025 Directing Progam and 2025 Writing Progam, as part of the company’s initiative to foster the next generation of creative talent by connecting emerging writers and directors with opportunities across Det’s scripted and unscripted television slate.

Brown most recently was seen starring in the seventh and final season of the CBS series Seal Team. The actor has starred on 114 episodes.

He also had a large recurring role in the HBO series Insecure opposite co-creator and star Issa Rae.

Previously, Brown appeared alongside Elijah Wood in BBC’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.

The writers of the HBO comedy Insecure, Issa Rae and Syreeta Singleton, have announced that they’ve been developing a remake of F. Gary Gray’s heist film Set It Off back in 2019. Little news has been revealed since then and both have gone on to other projects. Notably, Singleton is recently coming off of the comedy, One of Them Days, which our own Tyler Nichol enjoyed as he said in his review, “I tend to be a tough sell when it comes to comedy and One of Them Days managed to really tickle my funny bone. It’s one and done for How to Die Alone: Hulu has cancelled the Natasha Rothwell comedy after a single season, TVLine has confirmed.

In a statement to our sister site Variety, Rothwell said that she was “shocked, heartbroken and frankly, baffled” that Hulu and On Collective — which produces series from creators of color and other underrepresented groups — decided not to move forward with Season 2.

“How to Die Alone,” the comedy series created by and starring Natasha Rothwell, has been canceled after one season on Hulu.

The series hailed from On Collective, a Disney content brand that produces projects created by people of color and from underrepresented communities. On gave “How to Die Alone” a series order in November of 2022 before releasing it in September 2024.

In a statement to Variety, Rothwell wrote that she is “shocked, heartbroken and frankly, baffled” at On’s decision. Universal and Blumhouse’s “Wolf Man” reboot and the Keke Palmer-led comedy “One of Them Days” will contend for the top slot on box office charts over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

Regardless of which lands in first, neither are expected to break out in what’s shaping up to be another quiet weekend for North American cinemas. “Wolf Man” is poised to open to $17 million to $21 million from 3,300 venues over the four-day frame, while “One of Them Days” looks to collect $8 million to $13 million from 2,650 theaters between Friday and Monday.

Universal and Sony each canceled the premieres of “Wolf Man” and “One of Them Days” due to the fires and extreme winds in Los Angeles. In terms of moviegoing, though, attendance doesn’t appear to be affected by the devastating wildfires that continued to ravage though parts of Los Angeles, one of the biggest theatrical markets in the country.

When it comes to noteworthy upcoming movies, one film that may have flown under the radar for some is One of Them Days, a comedy produced by Issa Rae, starring Keke Palmer and musician Sza in her acting debut, with plenty of different avenues when it comes to finding a way to watch the film. One of Them Days follows the story of two best friends, Dreux, played by Palmer, and Alyssa, played by Sza, who have to try and come up with enough money to pay their rent for the month after Alyssa's boyfriend steals it.

It’s hard to get a read on a show from a 60-second trailer, but the hook is compelling, and the cast is an embarrassment of riches, meaning we should be in for one of the more buzzy shows of the 2024-25 TV season.

NBC on Friday released the first trailer for the forthcoming drama, which premieres Sunday, Feb. 23, at 10/9c. (People was the first to report the news.) In the series, a group of suburbanites reveal the first rule of their local gardening club: Everyone must have each others’ backs. Shouldn’t be too hard, in theory, except that Grosse Pointe Garden Society looks like it’s dealing with homicide, arson and more seedy misbehavior. (Oh my!)

“The Chosen” will once again get a theatrical launch for its upcoming Season 5 before making its streaming debut. As previously expected, 5&2 Studios — the newly-formed production company now behind the global hit — will release Season 5, dubbed “The Chosen: Last Supper” in theaters in the weeks leading up to Easter (which is on April 20 in 2025). Exclusive: Jasmeet Raina, the creator and star of Late Bloomer, will make his directing debut in the Crave comedy’s second season.

Production on Season 2 recently got underway in the greater Toronto region, starring Raina as Jasmeet Dutta, a Punjabi Sikh millennial and burgeoning online content creator trying to balance his ambitions for success with his commitment to his family, community and culture. It is inspired by Raina’s life.

Co-executive producer Peter Huang is back to direct six of the season’s eight episode, with Raina directing the other two and also executive-producing. Pier 21 is producing in association with Crave.
